Journal 02. Seasonally Inspired Living with Madelyne Beckles

Today we are welcoming Madelyne Beckles to our journal series! Madelyne is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Yoga Teacher, and Interdisciplinary Artist currently based in Port Perry, Ontario. Madelyne weaves mindfulness into her days with grace and intention, and shares on how we can feel connected to nature through nourishing meals and seasonal living. We’re thrilled to share her reflections on slowing down, staying connected to nature, and how we can all get a bit closer to nature through what we consume.

How do you incorporate seasonal living into your daily life?

The seasons inform everything about my life. Aligning with nature’s cycles  has given my life a deeper meaning by connecting to something greater than myself and using the intelligence of earth as a road map for how to live with purpose.

Cooking and eating with intention is a big part of my life as a holistic nutritionist! I eat a seasonal diet by consuming produce that is mostly grown around me and employing cooking methods that suit the environmental conditions. This not only takes the guesswork out of what foods to buy and eat, it also brings variety to our year, and more significance to fruits and vegetables. I get as excited for tomato, corn, and salad season, as I do for squash, citrus, and soup season!

I like to attune my daily routines with the seasons as well. For example, in the winter, I have a more robust evening routine to wind down and prepare for a deep sleep; and in the summer, I like to do my morning kundalini practice outside by the water on my dock.

The seasons can also be imposed as a framework for our lives beyond the environment: each day has a season, the seasons of our menstrual cycles, the seasons of our lives - they are a very comforting guiding force to me.

What’s your favorite herb or ingredient to use, and why does it resonate with you?

Nettle is everything to me. It’s super accessible and unassuming, as it grows abundantly; it’s usually outside your front door, and if not, definitely in your neighbourhood. It’s nutrient dense, with high levels of minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and antioxidants. It’s incredibly beneficial for hormonal health, reproductive health, the liver, kidneys, and blood; it’s supportive to the immune system and the nervous system; and it’s an excellent beauty tonic! I drink about a litre of nettle infusion every single day.

Do you have a favorite season? How do you celebrate its arrival?

As each year passes and my seasonal living practices deepen, I truly hold reverence and awe for what they each bring. I love the quiet, restorative energy of winter; the rebirthing that is spring, the fullness of summer, and the practicality of fall. They are all so complementary and necessary; I look forward to each opportunity to sink into their wisdom.

If you could share one tip for creating a more intentional home, what would it be?

I am a big proponent of hand-me-downs and buying old things that have had a life before you. My home is full of passed down furnishings, dishware, art and objects from family, which is so precious to me. Most of the things I buy are thrifted or from antique stores. Aside from the sentimental value, and sustainable methods of consumption, it also helps to make your home more uniquely you! I like to look at the task of building a home as a lifelong endeavour not to be rushed; over time your style, taste, and collection will develop into a rich mosaic of memories and curiosities.
